What Is Climate Change Mitigation

Climate change is primarily caused by human activities[1] . This is the conclusion reached by over 97% of scientific studies published in academic journals[2] , as well as by leading international scientific institutions, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and NASA. The rise in greenhouse gas emissions that began with the Industrial Revolution - particularly carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH4 ), due to the use of fossil fuels, industrial processes, intensive agriculture, and changes in land use - has already caused measurable warming of the Earth’s surface and oceans, with growing and increasingly evident impacts on ecosystems and societies.

Climate change mitigation encompasses all actions aimed at reducing climate-altering emissions, limiting the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and slowing the rise in global temperatures. This is not merely a matter of isolated measures implemented by individual companies or countries, but rather a structural transformation of the economic and production model involving energy (with the transition from fossil fuels to renewables), mobility (to be progressively electrified), and industrial processes (to be decarbonized and oriented toward circularity). This is accompanied by the protection and restoration of natural ecosystems, which are essential for CO₂ absorption.

From this perspective, mitigation is not only a response to an emergency, but a driver of technological, industrial, and social innovation, capable of reshaping entire sectors of the economy.

[3]The Paris Climate Agreement, signed in 2015, commits the 194 Parties (national governments and the European Union) to limit the global temperature increase to well below 2 °C compared to pre-industrial levels, while aiming to limit it as much as possible to 1.5 °C.
To achieve this goal, countries are required to define and periodically update National Emissions Reduction Plans, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
However, the commitments made so far are not sufficient to keep warming within the threshold considered safe by the scientific community. Even if all currently submitted plans were fully implemented, the global temperature increase by the end of the century would be between 2.3 and 2.5 °C above pre-industrial levels[4
] . The Global Climate Highlights 2025 report[5] confirms that the last three years were the warmest on record and that the average for the 2023–2025 period exceeded 1.5 °C for the first time ever.

This does not mean that the Paris targets have already failed, as they refer to a long-term average, and according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), many tools already exist to drastically reduce emissions. Low-carbon technologies are mature, and renewable sources have reached competitive costs. Data from the Ember research center[4] shows that in 2025, solar grew faster than any other source of electricity, and new renewable capacity installed during the year reached approximately 793 GW. Solar and wind covered 17.6% of global electricity generation, bringing the total share of low-carbon sources to 43%.

Beyond the national emission reduction plans that states must periodically define and update, a significant contribution to decarbonization can also come from companies through the adoption of SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative)[7] targets, recently updated with stricter criteria. In essence: the Paris Agreement specifies how much global warming must be reduced, while SBTi targets highlight the contribution a company can make to align with the global decarbonization trajectory.

Climate Change Mitigation for Angelini Industries

The first step toward reducing environmental impacts related to climate change is understanding one’s own carbon footprint. For years, the Group has been measuring its carbon emissions, which in 2025 were fully subject to assurance (Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 across the entire Group) - a milestone that allowed for the precise identification of generated emissions and potential strategic solutions.

Angelini Industries is committed to reducing its GHG emissions by 2030, in line with the Paris Agreement. In particular, Angelini Pharma validated a decarbonization trajectory through 2030 that foresees a 42% reduction in Scope 1 + Scope 2 emissions, and a 25% reduction in Scope 3. Already during 2025, the Group's Scope 1 + Scope 2 emissions decreased significantly (-25%) compared to 2024.

This result was made possible through a series of initiatives, including the purchase of certified renewable electricity across all Italian plants and selected international sites, self-production of electricity from renewable sources, and the installation of charging stations to support sustainable mobility.

At the Group level, another notable decarbonization achievement was reached by Fater, which subscribed to SBTi targets (currently under review) and reduced its overall carbon footprint by 15% in FY 2024/2025 compared to the FY 2020/2021 baseline, thanks to the integration of environmental sustainability into the product innovation process.

Taken together, these actions reflect a vision of mitigation as a structured, ongoing process that combines scientific rigor, technological solutions, and future-oriented industrial choices. These choices do not remain confined to internal operations, but produce tangible, positive impacts on the territories and communities where the company operates.
